How to Make NetSuite Data Migration a Breeze

A visual depiction of the data migration process

If you’re planning to move away for obsolete or unwanted programs, there’s no better time than the present. While moving away from an established system can seem tricky at first, the good news is that data mapping is significantly easier with NetSuite thanks to its inbuilt toolbox.

NetSuite automatically removes duplicate information, enhancing data integrity. Moreover, importing CSV files is easier with NetSuite as it automatically updates legacy systems to meet the requirements of NetSuite’s structure and field style.

However, despite the ease of the data migration process with NetSuite, you still need to have a plan on hand. As any reliable NetSuite integration service provider will tell you, a formal migration procedure is necessary to ensure successful implementation.

Let’s take a look:

1. Prepare your staff beforehand

Before you implement the plan, ensure that your team knows about what’s going to happen. Clear and honest communication can prevent employees from feeling anxious or confused about the process. Send frequent updates and explain how the process can affect their work and schedules.

By working with a NetSuite implementation partner, you should be able to draw up a roadmap of the process and inform staff accordingly.

2. Identify data to be migrated

Once you’ve identified the data that needs to be migrated, ensure that the source data is accurate and complete beforehand to prevent problems later down the line.

You should also make sure that all the fields required by NetSuite are filled out correctly in the CSV file to prevent errors and delays during the import process.

3. Consider the cost

Data migration is an excellent time to trim the excess and start anew. Every record you transfer into NetSuite comes at a cost—so practice restraint and only transfer documents that you need to have in the new system.

Old records such as old historical patterns are of no use in the system, so it’s best to get rid of them.

4. Carry out tests on a small scale

Before moving all the required data onto NetSuite’s servers, start by moving smaller chunks and testing it first. Confirm that all the relevant fields are filled and that the layouts are working as expected to ensure complete data integrity.

5. Document the process

Documenting the entire process, including roles, personnel, milestones, key dates, and issues, is a must. Not only will this help you stay on track during the project and increase accountability, but it also helps you identify areas of improvement for the future.
